University Programs

CANVAS cooperates with many universities to spread the word of “people power” and share tools for achieving nonviolent change in society. In cooperation with these universities, CANVAS conducts guest lectures, holds workshops, teaches courses, and has developed an internship program.

Colorado College

CANVAS has been in cooperation with Colorado College in Colorado Springs since 2006. Srdja Popovic and Slobodan Djinovic teach a 2-week course entitled “Senior Transitions: Waging Non-Violent Conflict.” The “CANVAS” block in the college’s department of political science is one of the most popular among students. The course is based on CANVAS’s Core Curriculum content.

CANVAS has also welcomed interns from Colorado College since 2012.


CANVAS has led a course at NYU since January 2013 called “Nonviolent Political Activism.” This course, ideally for students interested in democratization, international development, conflict management, human rights, and security studies, focuses on the phenomenon of nonviolent conflict and explores how nonviolent movements are shaping national, regional, and international relations. The course is conducted through a combination of online and on-campus sessions. The course is offered at NYU every Spring semester.

University of Essex

CANVAS and the University of Essex have developed a course entitled “Strategic Nonviolent Action” under the university’s Department of Government. To be taught by CANVAS in coordination with Essex faculty, the course brings together theory and practice of strategic nonviolence to evaluate the nature of nonviolent social change. The course will be conducted via a combination of online and on-campus classes, and will be open to University of Essex students as well as to other interested parties.

Harvard University

In 2014 and 2015, CANVAS taught a 2-week class “The Strategic Application of Nonviolent Action” at  Harvard Kennedy School. This course integrated reading, discussion, and class projects focused on the theory and practice of human rights.

This cooperation was initiated in 2011, when CANVAS was invited to give a lecture on nonviolent social changes with a focus on the Arab Spring.

CANVAS has been in cooperation with Harvard Ash Center since 2015, conducting interactive online lectures.

CANVAS  has welcomed interns from Harvard University since 2013.

Northeastern University

Since September 2011, CANVAS has been in cooperation with Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts on various programs. Beyond regularly delivering guest lectures to more than 250 students, since 2012 CANVAS has also welcomed interns from Northeastern every semester at their office in Belgrade. In addition, as part of a Northeastern summer study program in the Balkans, CANVAS trainers give students a 2.5-day workshop on nonviolent methods and tactics.

Grinnell College

CANVAS has been in cooperation with Grinnell College since 2008. In 2013, CANVAS was invited to guest lecture a course that lasted three weeks. The course was based on the self-published book CANVAS Core Curriculum: A Guide to Effective Nonviolent Struggle and the workbook “Nonviolent Struggle, 50 Crucial Points.” This course was offered to students of Peace Studies, Russian, Central and Eastern European Studies, Policy Studies, and the general student population.

CANVAS has also welcomed interns from Grinnell College since 2015.

United States Air Force Academy

Starting in 2007 and continuing through the present, CANVAS representatives deliver the “Advantages of Nonviolent Struggle” presentation at the Colorado Air Force Academy. It is attended by students from the department of strategic policy.

Belgrade University

In January 2008, CANVAS began a joint graduate program with the Faculty of Political Science at Belgrade University. The course, entitled “Strategies and Methods of Nonviolent Social Change,” was offered twice as a part of the curriculum. It was the first certified course dedicated to Strategic Nonviolent struggle based on CANVAS’s Core Curriculum in Serbia. Additionally, in 2012, CANVAS representatives taught an MA course entitled “Political Analysis and Management.”


In September 2010 and in April 2011, CANVAS visited Rutgers University in New Jersey. In April 2012, CANVAS held a lecture on Nonviolent Social Changes for students of PhD studies.

This cooperation continues through yearly visits and guest lectures including: “People Power unveiled – how nonviolent struggle is changing our world”

Columbia University

CANVAS is in cooperation with Columbia University’s School of International and Public affairs, having given lectures on Nonviolent Social Change in April, September, and October 2011.

George Washington University

CANVAS has been in cooperation with George Washington University since 2012, participating in the “Workshop on Comparative Mass Mobilization and Protest.”

Georgetown University

CANVAS has been in cooperation with Georgetown University since 2012.

Johns Hopkins University

CANVAS was invited by the university’s School of Advanced International Studies to deliver a guest lecture on nonviolent social changes, with a special focus on the Arab Spring, in April 2011.

Tufts University

CANVAS has been in cooperation with TUFTS University since 2013, giving lectures and welcoming interns. Relevant topics have included:
